Jordan and Zack 7/03

Son- Zach-2004
Alrighty, here’s my exciting life:
10 Oct 80, I left PR to go to Los Alamitos, CA. What a let down… not as warm as I’d thought it’d be. Fast forward to 1983 and the year of my graduation… nothing happened then, either. I went to Monterey, CA, in 84 while my mom went to DLI to become a Russian linguist. The prospect of PCSing WITH my parents to Japan (my mom’s next assignment… my dad was retired by then) and working for AAFES or something like that, was oh so not appealing. So, I joined the Air Force. I was ever so lucky… I asked for East Coast/West Coast or overseas and I got… freaking Montana. 3 and a half years later, after volunteering for worldwide remote and not going any damn where, I guess someone took pity on me and I got orders to Florennes AB, Belgium. Did I mention I’d had my first child, Zak, by then… well I did. We moved to Belgium and I was supposed to be there for 2 years. However, 1988 was the start of the drawdown nightmare and I ended up leaving after 10 months. It was a great assignment and I got to practice my French so all was not lost. My next assignment (Mar 89) was “Club Med” (aka Iraklion AS, Crete, Greece). Every other Friday on the beach for one reason or another… tough, tough assignment. In addition, my wonderful second child, a daughter, Jordan, was born during that assignment (born in Turkey because they didn’t have a maternity ward on Crete). All good things come to an end and I was sentenced to RAF Upper Heyford, England. Actually, it wasn’t all that bad. No language barrier and the whole London thing was pretty fun, but those knuckleheads closed that base, too. The assignment team came (the one that used to come when base closures were a novelty) and I hit the “jackpot” and got an assignment to Tyndall. Although I hate look a gift horse, blah, blah, blah, I asked kindly could I please go to Turkey instead. I was obliged and began my 94 to 96 stay at Incirlik. Not a great assignment, but it wasn’t all bad and it kept me from venturing into Tyndall (aka as lower Alabama). As luck would have it, I got an assignment here to Ramstein AB, Germany, in 96 and I’ve been here ever since. I’m now scheduled to leave (after 2 extensions) in 2007. I’ll hang around here for another 5 years or so… my son will graduate in 2006 and my daughter in 2008. Then, my Puerto Rican stud and I will move to Spain. Yes, 20 years later and 7,000 miles away, I met a guy from Ponce. Figure the odds. In any case, he wants to be an expat, too, so Spain it is. Germany’s fine, but too cold and too many taxes. My German and French will do me no good there so I’m gonna try for a crash course in Spanish once we move. 3 years of Spanish 20 years ago allows you to ask for directions, but not much else. That’s my life.
